KENT PENSION FUND TO TAKE UP BORDER TO COAST JOINT COMMITTEE SECRETARIAT

Kent Pension Fund – one of the 18 Border to Coast Pensions Partnership (“Border to Coast”) Partner Funds – is set to become the new secretariat of the partnership’s Joint Committee.
Border to Coast’s Joint Committee (JC) is comprised of Pension Fund Committee representatives from each of its Partner Funds. It meets quarterly and is the collaborative vehicle through which the Partner Funds provide collective oversight of the performance and direction of the pool.
This secretariat function has been administered by South Yorkshire Pensions Authority since 2018. From 9 July, Kent Pension Fund will take on these duties.
Kent Pension Fund is one of seven LGPS funds that joined the Border to Coast partnership in April this year as a result of the ‘Fit for the Future’ LGPS reforms, which reduced the number of pool companies from eight to six. The other funds are Cambridgeshire, East Sussex, Essex, Hertfordshire, Northamptonshire and West Sussex.
It was deemed appropriate by the committee – as part of the development of the wider partnership’s culture – that one of these funds would be the natural choice to succeed SYPA in the JC Secretariat role.
Nick Buckland, Head of Pensions and Treasury at Kent Pension Fund said: “The Joint Committee provides important oversight of the pool but is also central to maintaining the collaborative nature of the partnership; bringing forward local perspectives, priorities or concerns where they need collective visibility and representation. We’re proud to take on this important duty and thank South Yorkshire for carrying the baton for the last eight years.”
Gillian Taberner, Director at South Yorkshire Pensions Authority, added: “Having carried out this duty since the pool was founded, and with the partnership growing to 18 funds this year, it seemed like the right time for change. The voice of the shareholder and the spirit of collaboration that is maintained through the Joint Committee will evolve as we grow, but its importance will remain key to our collective success moving forwards.”
