Congratulations Colin: new LSE Visiting Senior Fellow

Colin Baines, Stewardship Manager

Colin Baines, our Stewardship Manager, has been appointed a Visiting Senior Fellow at the London School of Economics.

In his LSE role, which is additional to his work at Border to Coast, Colin will be supporting the work of the LSE’s Grantham Research Institute on Climate Change and the Environment on sustainable finance focusing on Just Transition*. This will involve supporting its new Just Transition Finance Lab, which aims to be a world-leading centre for experimentation and excellence in the financial solutions needed for a just transition to a net zero and nature positive economy. The Lab will build on five years of LSE research and convening, which Colin has contributed to.

Since joining Border to Coast in November 2022, Colin has led Border to Coast’s engagement programme on Just Transition, working in partnership with Royal London Asset Management to engage UK banks to integrate just transition into their net zero strategies, and piloting engagement with an emerging market energy utility.

Prior to Border to Coast, Colin led collaborative investor engagement which secured the world’s first Just Transition strategy from SSE plc, followed by EDF, Centrica, Scottish Power, and Eon, as well as building a portfolio of supportive impact investments. His work has been cited as best practice by inquiries by the Scottish Government Just Transition Commission and the All-Party Parliamentary Group on Local Authority Pensions.

Just Transition is a key consideration for Border to Coast in our RI and Net Zero policies and Colin’s Fellowship will add value to our work in this area, ensuring we deliver for Partner Funds and stay at the forefront of Just Transition integration into Net Zero strategies.

Jane Firth, Head of Responsible Investment, said: “Congratulations to Colin. The whole team is delighted by his new appointment. It underlines his expertise and is welcome recognition of his ongoing contribution to sustainable finance and just transition.”

*The IPCC defines Just Transition as: “A set of principles, processes and practices that aim to ensure that no people, workers, places, sectors, countries or regions are left behind in the transition from a high-carbon to a low-carbon economy.”

“Congratulations to Colin. The whole team is delighted by his new appointment. It underlines his expertise and is welcome recognition of his ongoing contribution to sustainable finance and just transition.”
